Incarceration rates still far too high, says Professor Michael Mushlin

Though sentencing reform laws have helped reduce the U.S. prison population, Professor Michael Mushlin says the numbers are still much too high. Interviewed for an article that discusses reductions in state incarceration rates, Prof. Mushlin, an expert in prison reform, says the numbers may be lower but they are still alarming.

“This is not consonant with out traditions, our values,” says Mushlin, commenting on the record high numbers of the last few decades. “We just took a wrong path.”

The article appears on the website TakePart which is the digital division of Participant Media, the company behind such films such as “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Waiting For Superman,” “Food Inc,” “Good Night & Good Luck,” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.” It can be read here.
